Today it is one of the largest universities of the country. Mining and steel production came to an end and in the 1960s, the Opel car production began and offered jobs for miners who had lost their jobs in mining. Today it is a modern city with a job focus in the service sector. It has many parks, museums and events.

The program is research-oriented and builds consecutively on a general study of biology. The graduates of the Master’s program Biodiversity/Biodiversity specialize in molecular, organismic and exosystemic aspects of biodiversity. They are able to systematically present complex interrelationships between the different organizational levels of biodiversity and to place them in the context of existing research results. They have deepened their knowledge of the systematics, taxonomy and phylogeny of organisms as well as their function and distribution in natural habitats. They have extended their methodological knowledge to modern, specialized methods and can apply them in the laboratory and in the field. Multidisciplinary and the expansion of key competencies as well as competencies in the area of soft skills are curricular components. The graduates have an overview of the current state of research in specific areas of biodiversity research and can evaluate results critically and objectively. They can record contributions to the scientific discussion of socially relevant questions, evaluate them objectively and ethically, and justify the individual and social relevance of research projects. In addition, they can independently develop questions, plan, carry out and evaluate research projects, place them in a bioscientific context and present them in oral and written form in relation to their addressees.
