University of the Information Society
A strong foundation in computer science and interdisciplinary combination of many disciplines of information technology provides an excellent basis for your education. The university wants to achieve even more: it wants to advance the scientific-technological development of the information society and wants to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the information and knowledge society.
The University has a focus on the study of sciences and cultural studies. The original institution was founded in 1614. There are five faculties and 67 degree programs. With over 7,500 students the Faculty of Cultural Sciences is the largest.
The population is around 150.000 and it is in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is one of the most important centers of the computer science industry in Germany. The German computer pioneer Heinz Nixdorf had a great impact on the city. He has a museum named after him, which is the 7. Biggest computer museum in the world. A historical town center, an old castle, a wide range of cultural activities, plenty of green areas and hiking trails make it a very attractive place to live.

How can companies develop sustainably? What are the responsibilities of a Chief Financial Officer (CFO)? What impact does Brexit have on international trade? What influence does an increased tobacco tax have on the supply of and demand for cigarettes? Economics is an extensive subject area and consists of the following sub-disciplines: Business administration , economics , business informatics, business education and business law, which are closely linked to each other. In the context of the Business Administration course you are going to ask yourself how to best manage companies and how they should react to their internal and external business environment. In the economics you will focus on the big issues and laws in a society, with topics like economic growth, unemployment or inflation. In business informatics, business law and business education, you combine economic content with information and communication technologies, laws and regulations and questions of training and further education.
The first two semesters is the assessment phase. Basic modules in the areas of: business administration, economics, mathematics, statistics and business informatics will be given. During this assessment phase you will be accompanied by student mentors. The mentor offers you orientation in the university business and supports you in the transition to everyday study life, so that you can quickly get used to your new student life and scientific tasks.
The four semesters following the assessment phase form the profiling phase, which gives you various opportunities for specialization. The majors are arranged according to occupational profiles:
Management Taxation, Accounting Finance Production, Logistics & Controlling – Business Informatics – Economics – Business Education.
The bachelor thesis concludes the profiling phase. This examination should show that you are able to independently work on a problem in your subject area according to scientific methods within a given period of time.
