The Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry focuses on the future-oriented fields of material sciences, molecular chemistry and life sciences, with research topics ranging from solving practical problems in modern surface technology and catalysis research with industrial partners to questions of the chemical origin of life and the molecular mechanisms of memory processes. We distinguish ourselves through an unmistakable research profile, modern study structures in the Bachelor/Master system and an international environment.
The faculty is one of the few in Germany to have internationalized its doctoral programs in an International Graduate School of Chemistry and Biochemistry (GSCB). Launched as a DAAD-funded project, the GSCB now uses synergies with the RUB-Research School.
In the first part (1st – 4th semester), the Bachelor’s program teaches the basics of general and analytical chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, organic and physical chemistry – both in lectures and in exercises, seminars and practical courses. A special feature of our course is the strong emphasis on practical laboratory work. In addition, there are courses in biology, medicine, mathematics, physics, laboratory animal science and genetic engineering law.
